Barnes & Noble. Borders. Waldenbooks. Wherever you feel like going, chances are you will find the NEW BSC GRAPHIC NOVEL!!!
I started hearing that people in Chicago, and North Carolina, and New Zealand, and Nova Scotia had bought The Truth About Stacey already, so I decided to investigate for myself, at B&N on West 66th Street in Manhattan. Dave and I had one of those lovely, lovely moments where we found the new book, sat down right there in the aisle at the store, and just read and read and read. It didn't hurt that it was a glorious, sunny fall day...in fact...
It was almost exactly a year ago that I went out to the West 60s to shoot reference for this very book (a portion of which takes place in New York City). And it was the same kind of day as this. So walking back to the subway, we re-traced my Stacey-steps, looking at stuff that was now in the book and on the shelf, drinking warm apple cider from a greenmarket, stopping in Central Park to enjoy the weather and the trees, and just feeling giddy and happy. I'll make another post at some point with some of my various points of reference & photos used in the books so far.
This is one of my favorite pages in the new book, and one people have really responded to so far. I only had 6 months to draw this book, but I gave it my all, and I hope it shows!
Official release date for Stacey is still set as November 1, so I'm not sure if orders from places like Amazon will ship till then, or when comic stores will get it. I'll keep you guys posted. I'm having an official 'release party/signing' at Rocketship in Brooklyn, on Sunday, November 12 at 4 PM. It'll be a team signing with my friend Abby Denson, and this will be a super kid-friendly event, complete with free ice cream and cookies! Rocketship is one of the coolest comic stores I've ever been to, so you should come and check it out.
Thanks again to everyone who has supported me and my work up till now. You guys rock.
--Oh! And I should note that my desk really, actually looks like that at the moment--I did NOT re-arrange things for this picture! I was in the middle of drawing SMILE, and my materials were placed just so.
So what's the next book you're working on? When will that one come out, in the spring? (I just can't wait for the next one!!!)
Mary Anne Saves the Day. It'll be out in September of '07, I believe?
Ohhh a whole year!
And I really do love the candy store drawings... so detailed with all the little cases of candy. Love it!
SEPTEMBER?!?! You just broke my little heart .. HOW AM I GOING TO WAIT THAT LONG?! I'll just have to content myself with re-reading the other two. Hee. :)
At least I post a new page of my webcomic every week! :D
Even that's not often enough for my liking, haha. I'm an impatient gal, what can I say?
Quick question: where have you found the first two books shelved at B&N/Borders/etc? I ask because I looked all over the graphic novel section for #1, but couldn't find it (I ended up ordering it from Amazon.) Is it in kids' series, or what?
Yeah, it's always shelved in the kids section. I've inquired about cross-shelving, but I guess stores don't do that unless the publisher pays them a lot of money. :) So, it's in kids. At B&N, I've always seen it in "Favorite Series," right next to the Boxcar Children. At Borders, I saw it as part of a recommended reading display with Bone and a couple other things. While I'm not 100% on the name of the shelf it's typically located, it's something similar to B&N's!
In Borders, it was under independent reader-series-friendship. (Subsection after subsection...) I used to work at Borders which is how I know. ;)
Hey, Rianna... I bought the first BSC graphic Novel a few months ago, but forget to tell you how much I loved it! I really got involved with characters I didn't think I would get attached to. Thanks... and my wife also loved it, she said it reminded her of reading the originals.
I am really glad to see the new one is out.
Yay! I'm happy you guys enjoyed it! I think it's a good introduction for people who have never read the original series, and a huge slice of nostalgia for those who have. :)
Raina, The Truth About Stacey is amazing! I love the flashbacks! I love how cute Laine is! I love Claudia's winter clothes! I love that it mentioned Thanksgiving, and it's Thanksgiving weekend here (haha)!
Now I can't wait to get my hardcover copy. Hurry up and come back to Toronto? :)
Wheee! I'm so glad you liked it!! Obviously, I value your opinion, so...thanks. :)
Oh my goodness, if it wasn't a statutory holiday here and alll the stores are closed I would TOTALLY go out right now and buy it. I was just re-reading the first one yesterday and thought: "hmm, isn't the second one coming out soon?" and now this post!
And I second you coming to Toronto, I'll make cupcakes for you, birthday-buddy!
Aw, you're sweet! Well, if all goes according to planned, I'll be in TO again sometime next spring. Hopefully around our birthdays, actually! More details as they come to me...
You too!! Have fun at SPX this weekend, okay?
You are welcome. :) Congrats.
ah! I have to go buy it! good thing i get paid soon!! yay!!!!
I hope you like it, Sofia. :)
It looks awesome-- can't wait to pick it up! :)
I just read the first one a month or so ago. really enjoyed it.

Hey, congrats Raina! I hope we get our copies in tomorrow (everything is closed because of Canadian Thanksgiving).
Happy belated Canadian Thanksgiving...ours is one week before my wedding. I'll have to go easy on the pumpkin pie this year!
Are you coming to north central CT anytime soon to promote TAS? Please say yes!
I would love to come to CT! Do you know of a school, or a library, or a bookstore that would like to host me? I'm always up for stuff like that. If you want to have someone from one of those places get in touch, they are welcome to contact me at goRaina AT yahoo DOT com. Thanks for asking! :D
I can't wait to read it! Having bought Jess book one I got her hooked, now she's gonna keep buying them.
Woo! You guys are so awesome. A lot of people have been asking me about getting the books in Australia...you special ordered yours, right? Is it a US import? Have you seen it in any stores? I am hearing about Dymock's, but I don't actually know if that is a retail chain, or a department store, or what. I turn to you and Jess for ANSWERS. :p
Dymocks is one of our main chains, and I've seen it on the shelves there, I have also seen it on the shelf in at least one small-not-a-chain store.
I did special order it, but that was because I ordered it before it was officially released here.
HOWEVER I have yet to see book two anywhere.
Or Bone, though I did see Queen Bee once.
Anyways, whenever I go into a book store, I actually check to see if your books are there, but I mostly go into the same two book stores.
I'll let you know when we find and pick up book two. If it doesn't happen soon we'll probably order it again.
I picked up a copy at The Comics Factory already. It looks awesome! :D
do you know how i could get it in Australia, which book stores will be stocking it? I loved baby-sitters club. and earlier this evening i was introduced to your SMILE comic through danielle's girls with slingshots and read it from the start and loved it. great work! i'm turning into a very big comic fan, and never really read them much before this year. looking forward to more strips of SMILE.
Hey, thank you!
I'm actually not sure about how the Australian market works, but some people have said that Dymock's is a good store to get it from--some of my friends have special ordered it through small independent stores, some have found it elsewhere. Sadly I've never been able to get a specific answer from my editors about this, as I believe all the copies that come there are imports. But maybe Scholastic Australia has an edition? I don't know! I just know that plenty of people in Australia have gotten ahold of the first book, at least.
I'm glad you're liking SMILE! I update every Wednesday. Danielle was very sweet to give me such a nice write-up. :)

Re: New From quebec City
Aw, that's so cool, Julie! Thanks for letting me know! :D
So I commented on your journal when I got Kristy's Great Idea (although I was value_meal_2
at the time), but I had to comment again since now I've read the Truth About Stacey-- I LOVE IT. LOVE LOVE LOVE it. I'm studying abroad in Ireland right now and, the instant I saw that the book was out in the States, I made my boyfriend buy me a copy and mail it over here ASAP! I adore the way you draw the girls and all the characters-- I loved dorky Mallory in the Jamie's party scenes, and Charlotte was WAY adorable. I can't wait to see Dawn in the next book when Mary Anne meets her! Also, Laine was super cute and I loved the pictures of New York-- it made me feel like I was actually there, although I was born and raised an hour south of San Francisco (Sunnyvale--woo bay area!! I, too, have memories of the 1989 earthquake).
I'll wrap this up now, but basically I absolutely love your work and I think you're one of the most talented cartoonists out there today. I'm also a huge fan of Smile-- in fact, it's the only comic (besides For Better or For Worse) that I read on a regular basis!
Keep up the good work! You rock my BSC-lovin' world, Raina! =)
Aw, wow! Thank you! :D What is Ireland like? I'd love to go there someday.
My family had friends in Sunnyvale while I was growing up, so we were down in your area a lot back in the day! And my dad has worked in Santa Clara for like 20 years or something crazy. Hooray for Bay Area love!
I'm glad you're liking SMILE, too. It's amazing to be lumped in with Lynn Johnston, she's probably the most influential artist on my art and my style. I'm gonna be a sad cookie when she retires the strip next year...
Anyway, thanks a bunch. :)
Oh, I know! When I heard that FBoFW was ending I was like... "what???" =(
Ireland is seriously cool. The weather is definitely a lot colder than what I'm used to, but it's not too much different than being in San Francisco every day, I guess. It's so green, and there are a lot of sheep. People are extremely nice and the shopping is awesome. You should definitely visit if you ever get the chance!
